History of Lifestyle Development Group CLG
LIFESTYLE DEVELOPMENT Beginnings
Lifestyle Development Group, originally known as Women’s Lifestyle Development was founded in 1991 as an independent, voluntary community group. Guided by the principals of Community Development, the dream was to create a friendly, comfortable and supportive environment in which women could come together, avail of formal and informal education programmes and determine the way forward for the group.
In 1994 Women’s Lifestyle Development was incorporated as a Limited Company and secured Charitable Status. Subsequently many men expressed an interest in joining the group programmes and activities, so it was decided to change the name to Lifestyle Development Group Ltd. In 1994 also Lifestyle received the Fas National Community Initiative Award.
For over 30 years Lifestyle has continued to operate from Ballsgrove on the south side of Drogheda, engaging in a range of activities and providing services which meet the needs of individuals and families in the local community. Our growth has been organic delivering a broad spectrum of education/training in the community; providing early years education and child care. Additional services and projects have been developed in response to needs identified through conversations, programme evaluations, and surveys.
LIFESTYLE PREMISES
Holy Family Boxing Club, Ballsgrove, Drogheda has been home to Lifestyle programmes since 1991. As Lifestyle services increased and expanded in response to need, further spaces were rented and were occupied by various new projects as they developed eg Lifestart, Counselling Service, Focus your Future.
A new Lifestyle Building was constructed in 1997 to provide Childcare Rooms and Office space. In 2001 Lifestyle Board of Directors and senior staff, targeted the derelict stable block behind The Lifestyle building for redevelopment. With support from RAPID, funds were secured from various Government Departments. Drogheda Borough Council and Drogheda Partnership supported the venture and the new Centre was opened on April 4th 2008 and subsequently won a major international architectural award in 2010.
At present, we occupy the Lifestyle Centre and stable complex, and we rent office and training space in Magdalene St., at Holy Family Boxing Club and in the Parish Centre, Ballsgrove. Lifestyle Development has created a social and physical space where people, from the local community and beyond, can find belonging, friendship, and developmental opportunities
